Does Your Tree Actually Need to Come Down?

Not always. Before we remove any tree, we tell you honestly whether it needs to go or whether it can be saved. Some trees that look dangerous can be kept. We might suggest you have it saved with a crown reduction to take off height and weight. Or we might make it safe with careful pruning to take out dead or damaged branches.

There are clear cases where removal is the right and only safe choice. A tree should usually come down when it is dead or diseased beyond saving. The same is true if it is unstable, leaning dangerously, lifting paving, or damaging walls and drains. Some trees simply grow in the wrong place and have to go.

We give you a straight answer, not an automatic yes. If your tree can be kept, we will say so. If it needs to come down, we remove it safely and cleanly.

Choosing the right work

Which One Does Your Tree Need?

The right technique depends on what you want to change. Here is the simple version.

For more light, choose crown thinning

If you want more light through a dense tree, you want crown thinning. It opens up the canopy so light and air get through, while the tree keeps its shape.

For more space underneath, choose crown lifting

If you want more space underneath, over a path, a drive, or a lawn, you want crown lifting. It raises the lower canopy to give you room to walk and park.

For a smaller tree, choose crown reduction

If you want the tree itself made smaller, that is a different job called a crown reduction, which lowers the height and spread. Not sure which you need? Tell us what is bothering you about the tree and we will recommend the right approach.

Light and balanced

How Much We Take Off

We keep both jobs light and balanced, so your tree stays healthy and looks natural. With crown thinning, we take out branches evenly across the crown, usually no more than about 30%, so the tree never looks bare or patchy.

With crown lifting, we take off only the lower branches and avoid big cuts to the main trunk. This protects the tree from damage and rot. Our work follows British Standard BS3998, the recognised guide for tree work in the UK.

Natural-looking tree work

Done this way, the change looks natural, not heavy-handed. You get the light or the space you wanted, and the tree still looks like itself.

How Do You Remove a Tree Safely?

We remove a tree in one of two ways, depending on the space around it. The method keeps your property, your neighbours, and our team safe at every stage.

Felling where there is room

Where there is plenty of room, we fell the tree. This means cutting it so it falls in a planned, controlled direction.

Sectional dismantling in tight spaces

Where the tree is close to a house, a fence, or other trees, we take it down piece by piece instead. We call this sectional dismantling.

Ropes, rigging and controlled lowering

We use ropes and rigging to lower each part gently to the ground, keeping the work controlled from start to finish.

Clear, fixed pricing

What Does Tree Removal Cost?

The cost depends on the tree, so we give you a fixed price once we have seen it. A small tree in an open garden is a quick job. A tall tree close to a house takes longer and needs more rigging, so it costs more.

The price comes down to the size and height of the tree, how easy it is to reach, and how close it is to buildings. You may also want us to grind out the stump. We can add that to the same quote. Taking away and recycling the wood is part of the job.

We are upfront about money. The price we quote is the full price, with nothing added at the end. You get a free, no-obligation quote before any work starts, so you always know the cost first.

The main things that affect the price

Quick to scan before you enquire

Size and height of the tree

Taller, heavier trees take more time, planning, cutting and lowering.

How close it is to buildings

Trees near houses, walls, fences or sheds often need more rigging.

How easy it is to reach

Open access is quicker. Tight paths, steps or awkward gardens can add time.

Stump grinding and waste

Taking away and recycling the wood is included. Stump grinding can be added.

Protected trees

Do You Need Permission to Remove a Tree?

Sometimes, yes. A tree with a Tree Preservation Order needs written permission from the council before it can come down. The same applies to any tree in a conservation area. Taking down a protected tree without permission is an offence, so it is worth checking first.

We check whether your tree is protected before we quote, and if permission is needed, we handle the application for you. We work across North Hertfordshire Council and Central Bedfordshire Council areas and know the local rules.

We check before we cut.

You do not have to guess whether permission is needed. We check the protection status first, explain what happens next, and make sure the work is handled properly.

Common Questions

Tree Felling and Removal Questions, Answered

Straight answers about tree felling, safe removal, permission, stump grinding, timescales, and insurance.

07778 639748

What is the difference between tree felling and tree removal?

Felling means cutting a tree down in one controlled fall, where there is space for it. Removal is the wider job. It often means taking the tree down in sections when it is near a building or in a tight spot. Both end with the tree gone and the site cleared.

Can I remove a tree myself?

You can remove a small, unprotected tree yourself, but it is risky and often harder than it looks. Larger trees, trees near buildings, and protected trees are best left to a qualified team. It is usually cheaper to hire a professional than to pay for damage later.

Do I need permission to remove a tree?

Sometimes, yes. A tree with a Tree Preservation Order, or any tree in a conservation area, needs council permission first. We check this for you before we quote and handle the paperwork if it is needed.

How long does it take to remove a tree?

Most garden tree removals are finished in a day. A large tree, a tight access, or several trees together can take longer. We give you a clear timescale with your quote.

Do you remove the stump as well?

We can, if you want us to. Stump removal is a separate job using a grinder. We can add it to the same quote, so the whole tree is gone and the ground is clear.

Are your tree surgeons insured?

Yes, our team is fully insured, with public liability and employers liability cover. We are also NPTC and Lantra qualified, so your tree and your property are in safe hands.
