Should You Choose Turf or Seed?

Most people arrive wanting a new lawn. The first real question is whether to lay turf or sow seed, and then whether the ground is ready so the grass actually takes.

Turf gives you an instant lawn. It is usable in a few weeks, costs more, and can go down for most of the year. Seed costs less but is slower, takes a few months to establish, and needs more patience while it grows.

We help you choose what suits your garden, your budget, and how soon you want to use it. There is no wrong answer, just the right one for your situation, and we will talk it through with you.

How Do You Prepare Ground for a New Lawn?

Good ground preparation is what makes or breaks a new lawn, and it is the same whether you lay turf or sow seed. Get it right and the lawn thrives. Skimp on it and the grass thins and dies.

We clear and level the ground, break up the soil, and rake it to a fine, firm surface. That gives the roots something to take hold in, so the lawn establishes evenly and lasts.

A lawn laid on poor or compacted ground rarely does well, however good the turf. So this is the part worth getting right, and it is the part we never rush.

This is the second time I have used this company. First was to completely remove a conifer tree , and yesterday , to trim back some willow trees at the back of the garden. From start to finish this company was excellent. From coming out to quote and then when they came out to actually do the job. They arrived at agreed time . We're excellent at keeping everywhere clean and tidy .Everything had to go through my kitchen as there is no access through my garden, also the trees were actually on school premises with a large , high wire fence so that made it extremely difficult for the team . Extremely happy with all the did .I would definitely use this company again .

Darren and the Treescapes team have been fantastic. On time and did an excellent job. They took off 25% off some of the bigger trees and did away with a lot of the dead wood. I can highly recommend to anyone in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire area looking for tree surgery.

We are delighted that we booked Darren and his team to do some work for us. From my initial call to him, the service we received was friendly, helpful - giving us advise from his 30 plus years of experience - and also every professional. In addition, having made an initial site visit, Darren was able to book us in for a few hours of work a couple of days later. The work included pruning some trees and some bushes, taking out and replacing some other bushes/plants with multi purpose compost added, edging the front beds and laying bark chippings on them, plus applying a top dressing to the bed in the rear garden. They cleared up all the waste and took it away, too. All at what we considered to be a reasonable price. Darren was also flexible and agreed to prune a couple of trees and a bush in our neighbours garden. They were also very pleased with the work undertaken. In summary, we can thorougly recommend Treescapes Garden Services and they will have repeat business from ourselves and our neighbours in due course.

When Is the Best Time to Lay Turf or Sow Seed?

Turf can go down for most of the year. The main times to avoid are hard frost and the height of a dry summer, when a new lawn struggles to settle.

Seed is best sown in spring or early autumn, when the soil is warm and damp and the grass germinates quickly. We will tell you the best time for your garden and the option you choose.

Clear lawn pricing

What Does a New Lawn Cost?

The cost depends on the job, so we give you a fixed price after a free site visit to measure up. The main factors are the size of the area, whether you choose turf or seed, and how much ground preparation is needed.

As a rough guide, the turf itself usually costs somewhere between £4 and £8 per square metre, depending on the quality. On top of that, the price depends on the ground work, whether an old lawn needs removing, and how easy the garden is to reach.

We are upfront about money. The price we quote is the full price, with nothing added at the end. The site visit and quote are free, with no obligation.

Common Questions

Lawn Questions, Answered

Straight answers about turf, seed, new build lawns, old lawn removal and how to look after your new grass.

07778 639748

Is it better to turf or seed a lawn?

Neither is better overall, it depends on what you want. Turf gives an instant lawn you can use in a few weeks and can go down most of the year, but it costs more. Seed costs less but takes a few months to establish and is best sown in spring or autumn. We will help you choose the right one for your garden.

How long before I can walk on a new lawn?

A turf lawn is usually ready for light use after about three weeks, once the roots have taken hold. A seeded lawn takes longer, often a few months, before it can take regular foot traffic. We will tell you when yours is ready when we lay it.

Do you remove the old lawn first?

Yes, if there is an old or tired lawn in the way, we remove it and prepare the ground before laying the new one. We take the old turf away and recycle what we can as a licensed waste carrier.

How do I look after a new lawn?

The main thing is watering, especially in the first few weeks while the roots take hold. A new lawn needs regular water and should be kept off until it has settled. We give you simple aftercare advice when we finish.

Can you lay a lawn on a new build?

Yes, we lay new lawns for new build homes, which often start with bare or rough ground. We prepare the ground from scratch and lay turf or sow seed to give you a proper lawn and instant kerb appeal.
