Plenty of people expect a tree surgeon covering a village this size to drive in from Bedford, Luton or Milton Keynes. Ours is closer than that. The yard is on Station Road in Lower Stondon, and the postcode on the door reads Henlow.
Being that near shows up in small practical ways. A quote visit takes minutes rather than half a morning, and coming back to check something after high winds never turns into a special trip. Firms advertising for Henlow work from thirty miles away have to build that travel into the price somewhere.

Henlow parish holds two settlements, and their gardens are nothing alike.

The old village around St Mary's church has mature trees standing close to boundaries, walls and older buildings. Work there goes slowly, usually taken down in sections rather than dropped in one piece.
Henlow Camp grew up around the airfield from the First World War onwards. Gardens there tend to be postwar estate plots with younger, faster growing trees and more shared boundaries, so hedges and overhanging branches come up far more often than big removals.
Change is coming as well. The base is due to close in 2026, and a developer is preparing plans for up to 270 homes on land east of Hitchin Road. New gardens bring new planting, and boundary hedges that will want a shape putting on them within a few years.

Those two keep separate tree records and separate planning teams, so a Henlow garden is never checked on the same system as one a few miles south. Getting that wrong is the most common reason a job stalls before it starts.

You might, and the check goes through Central Bedfordshire Council. A Tree Preservation Order or a spot inside the Henlow conservation area each bring rules with them. We look it up before quoting so nobody gets caught out.
A dead tree in a conservation area still needs five days of notice to the council. Take clear photographs before anything gets cut, because pictures settle most arguments later. Anything genuinely dangerous gets made safe first and evidenced properly.
Yes, clearing up is part of every job. Wood, brash and chippings all leave with us, and we hold a waste carrier licence. Logs can stay behind if you want them for the fire.
Branches crossing the boundary can normally be cut back to the line, but the cuttings and any fruit still belong to your neighbour. Protection changes that, because a Tree Preservation Order or a conservation area covers overhanging branches too. On the estates around the Camp, where boundaries are shared, a quiet word before anyone starts saves a lot of bother later.

Yes. BS 3998 is the British Standard for tree work, and it sets out how cuts should be made so a tree recovers properly. Poor pruning shows up years later, which is why the standard matters more than it sounds.
