Size of the stump
A small stump is usually quick. A wide, old, or awkward stump takes longer to grind properly below ground level.
We grind out the stump and leave level, usable ground. It costs less when done at the same time as the tree comes down.
Just mention it when you request your free quote. Available on qualifying work.
A tree comes down, but the stump stays put. It gets in the way of the mower, it can throw out new shoots, and it is easy to trip over. Old stumps can also harbour honey fungus, which can spread to other plants.
Stump grinding clears it for good. We use a machine to grind the stump down below ground level, so the space is yours to use again. It is the quickest and cleanest way to get rid of a stump.
Grinding is often the last step of tree felling and removal, but we are happy to grind out an old stump on its own too, however long it has been there.
Before Grinding
Shallow enough for turf and grass, or deeper when you need the area ready for replanting or building.
We grind a stump to about 6 to 12 inches below the surface. The right depth depends on what you want to do with the spot afterwards. For laying turf or grass, the shallower end is fine. For replanting or building, we go deeper.
The grinding turns the stump into wood chip. We backfill the hole with a mix of that chip and soil to leave a flat, level surface, ready to use. If you would rather we took the chip away, just say, and we will clear it.
You are left with a tidy patch of ground and no stump. There is nothing left to sprout, rot, or catch the mower.
With the stump gone and the ground level again, the space is ready for whatever you want next, whether that is new turf, a flower bed, or a patio. Tell us about your stump and we will give you a free quote.
The cost depends on the stump, so we give you a fixed price once we have seen it. A small stump in an open lawn is quick. A wide, old stump, or several together, takes longer.
The price comes down to the size of the stump, how many you have, how deep you want us to go, and how easy the stump is to reach. The one big saving is timing. It is cheaper to grind the stump while we take the tree down than to bring the machine back another day.
We are upfront about money. The price we quote is the full price, with nothing added at the end. You get a free, no-obligation quote before any work starts, so you always know the cost first.
Quick factors we check before quoting
A small stump is usually quick. A wide, old, or awkward stump takes longer to grind properly below ground level.
Several stumps together take more time, but can often be better value than booking them separately.
Turf or grass usually needs less depth. Replanting, landscaping, or building may need the stump ground deeper.
Open access is quicker. Narrow gates, steps, slopes, or awkward corners can add time to the job.

EXCELLENT Based on 77 reviews Posted on Google Pauline DunnTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This is the second time I have used this company. First was to completely remove a conifer tree , and yesterday , to trim back some willow trees at the back of the garden. From start to finish this company was excellent. From coming out to quote and then when they came out to actually do the job. They arrived at agreed time . We're excellent at keeping everywhere clean and tidy .Everything had to go through my kitchen as there is no access through my garden, also the trees were actually on school premises with a large , high wire fence so that made it extremely difficult for the team . Extremely happy with all the did .I would definitely use this company again .Posted on Google First PlaceTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Darren and the Treescapes team have been fantastic. On time and did an excellent job. They took off 25% off some of the bigger trees and did away with a lot of the dead wood. I can highly recommend to anyone in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire area looking for tree surgery.Posted on Google Jake MillerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Definitely recommend Darren and his team. Communication was great, popped over to give a very competitive quote and came the next week to trim the trees. Lovely job, they look great, thank you!Posted on Google simon mattickTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We are delighted that we booked Darren and his team to do some work for us. From my initial call to him, the service we received was friendly, helpful - giving us advise from his 30 plus years of experience - and also every professional. In addition, having made an initial site visit, Darren was able to book us in for a few hours of work a couple of days later. The work included pruning some trees and some bushes, taking out and replacing some other bushes/plants with multi purpose compost added, edging the front beds and laying bark chippings on them, plus applying a top dressing to the bed in the rear garden. They cleared up all the waste and took it away, too. All at what we considered to be a reasonable price. Darren was also flexible and agreed to prune a couple of trees and a bush in our neighbours garden. They were also very pleased with the work undertaken. In summary, we can thorougly recommend Treescapes Garden Services and they will have repeat business from ourselves and our neighbours in due course.Posted on Google Davina FrameTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Our Process
You get in touch by phone or through our form, and we arrange a visit at a time that suits you. We look at the stump and talk through what you want the space for.
We send you a fixed, written price with no obligation. There is nothing to pay and no pressure to go ahead.
Once you are happy, we book a date and grind the stump down below ground level. We shield the area to keep chip and stones away from your fences and paving.
We backfill the hole to leave a level surface, then clear up. The wood chip is recycled, or we take it away if you prefer.
A stump in a back garden is no trouble. We have machines of different sizes, so we can usually reach the stump through a standard gateway or a side passage.
Grinding does throw up wood chip and the odd stone, so we shield the working area to protect your fences, paving, and beds. Your garden is left clean and clear at the end.
Different stump grinders suit different gardens. We choose the machine that gives enough power for the stump while still fitting the access.
Before grinding starts, we shield the area where needed so flying chip and the odd stone are kept away from fences, paving and beds.
Once the stump is ground out, we backfill and tidy the area so you are not left with an open hole or a messy patch to deal with.
Just ask. Most back garden stumps are manageable, and we will tell you clearly what is possible before we quote.
We backfill the hole and leave a flat surface, so the space is yours again. No stump, no mess, nothing to trip over.
Our team is NPTC and Lantra qualified and fully insured, with public liability and employers liability cover. We have looked after local trees for 37 years.
Our machines come in different sizes, so a stump down a narrow passage or in a back garden is no problem.
We protect your fences and paving while we work, then recycle the chip or take it away. Your garden is left tidy.

07778 639748We grind a stump to about 6 to 12 inches below the surface. The shallower end suits laying turf, and we go deeper for replanting or building. We will agree the right depth with you before we start.
No, a ground-out stump will not grow back. Grinding takes the stump below ground level and breaks up the wood, so there is nothing left to send up new shoots. It also removes the rotting wood that can harbour disease.
We backfill the hole with a mix of wood chip and soil to leave a flat, level surface. If you would rather not keep the chip, we take it away and recycle it. Either way, the ground is left tidy and ready to use.
Most single stumps are ground out in an hour or two. A large, old stump, or several together, takes longer. We give you a clear timescale with your quote.
Yes, it usually is. Doing both in one visit saves us bringing the machine back another day, and that saving is passed on to you. If you are having a tree removed, it is worth grinding the stump at the same time.
Yes, our team is fully insured, with public liability and employers liability cover. We are also NPTC and Lantra qualified, so your garden and your property are in safe hands.
