What Is Tree Pruning?

Tree pruning is the careful removal of selected branches to keep a tree healthy, safe, and a good shape. It is not the same as cutting a tree down. The aim is to keep your tree and help it grow well, not to remove it.

Good pruning makes a real difference to your garden. It lets more light through, takes the weight off heavy or weak branches, and keeps the tree clear of your house, shed, or fence. A tree that is pruned well also lives longer and stays safer in strong winds.

We prune all kinds of garden trees, from young trees that need shaping to older, mature trees that have grown too big for their space. Where a tree needs more than a standard prune, we can also reduce the size of a large tree or thin out a dense crown to let in more light. Whatever your tree needs, we tell you plainly and never cut more than we have to.

When to prune

When Is the Best Time to Prune a Tree?

Most trees are best pruned in late autumn or winter, while they are dormant and not in active growth. Pruning in the dormant season puts less stress on the tree and lets it heal cleanly before spring.

Some trees need a different season Fruit trees such as apple and pear are usually pruned in winter. Plums and cherries are best pruned in summer to avoid disease. Many evergreens are best left until late spring. Trees that bleed sap, like birch and maple, prefer late summer or autumn.
Light safety pruning can often be done sooner Light pruning to remove dead or damaged branches can be done at almost any time of year. If you are not sure what your tree needs or when, we are happy to take a look and advise you. There is no charge for that.
Cost

How Much Does Tree Pruning Cost?

The cost of pruning depends on your tree, so we give you a fixed price after we have seen it. A small tree in an open garden is a quick job. A large, mature tree near a house takes longer and needs more care.

We are upfront about money. The price we quote is the full price, with nothing added at the end.

Protected trees

Do I Need Permission to Prune My Tree?

Some trees are protected, and these need written permission from the council before any work can start. We check this before we quote, so you know where you stand.

  • Tree Preservation Orders need consent before work starts.
  • Trees in conservation areas can also be protected.
  • We work across North Hertfordshire and Central Bedfordshire council areas.
Read the full permission guidance

Some trees are protected, and these need written permission from the council before any work can start. A tree with a Tree Preservation Order, or any tree in a conservation area, is protected by law.

This sounds more complicated than it is. We check whether your tree is protected before we quote, and if permission is needed, we can guide you through it. Working on a protected tree without consent can lead to a fine, so it is worth getting right.

We work across North Hertfordshire Council and Central Bedfordshire Council areas, and we know the local rules well. You can also look up the official guidance on Tree Preservation Orders on GOV.UK.

Common Questions

Tree Pruning Questions, Answered

Straight answers about timing, safety, waste, insurance and what tree pruning actually involves.

07778 639748

How often should trees be pruned?

Most mature trees only need pruning every three to five years. Younger trees grow faster and may need a light prune every two to three years to shape them well. Fruit trees usually need pruning once a year to crop well.

Is tree pruning bad for the tree?

No, pruning is good for a tree when it is done properly. Careful pruning removes dead or weak branches and helps the tree stay healthy. Bad pruning, where too much is cut at once, can harm a tree, which is why it is worth using a qualified arborist.

What is the difference between pruning and crown reduction?

Pruning is the general removal of selected branches to keep a tree healthy and tidy. Crown reduction is one type of pruning that makes the whole crown smaller while keeping the tree's natural shape. You can read more on our crown reduction page.

Do you remove all the branches and waste?

Yes, we clear every branch and leaf and leave your garden tidy. 99% of the waste we collect is recycled, so nothing is left for you to deal with.

Can you prune a tree in summer?

Some trees, including plums, cherries, and many evergreens, are best pruned in summer. Light pruning to remove dead or damaged branches can be done at most times of year. We will tell you the best time for your particular tree.

Are your tree surgeons insured?

Yes, our team is fully insured, with public liability and employers liability cover. We are also NPTC and Lantra qualified, so your trees and your property are in safe hands.
