Choosing well

Which Tree Is Right for Your Garden?

Maybe you want a tree for privacy, some shade in summer, or blossom in spring. The tricky part is knowing what will suit the spot, and how to plant it so it lives.

That is where we come in. We help you choose the right tree and plant it properly, whether you want something new or are replacing a tree that had to come down. You can ask us to supply the tree, or we can plant one you have already bought.

As qualified arborists, we pick for how big the tree will get, your soil, the light, and a safe distance from your house and drains. So you end up with a tree that thrives, without causing problems down the line.

Right tree, right place We look at the future size of the tree, the garden conditions, and nearby buildings before we recommend what to plant.

Planting season

When Is the Best Time to Plant a Tree?

The best time to plant most trees is between autumn and early spring, roughly October to April. The tree is dormant then, so it settles in with less stress and needs less watering while it roots.

Trees grown in pots can go in at most times of year, as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Bare-root trees are different and need to go in over the colder months while they are dormant.

If you are not sure when to plant what you have in mind, just ask. We will tell you the best time for that tree.

Best window: October to April Most trees settle better while dormant and under less stress.
Pot-grown trees are more flexible They can often be planted outside the main season if the ground is suitable.
Bare-root trees need colder months They should be planted while dormant, before spring growth begins.

Not sure on timing? Tell us what tree you have in mind and where it is going, and we will advise the best planting window.

How Do You Plant a Tree So It Survives?

Planting a tree well is more than digging a hole. The depth, the soil around the roots, and the support all decide whether the tree lives and grows straight.

We prepare the ground properly, plant at the right depth, and stake the tree where it needs support against the wind. Get this right and the roots take hold quickly, which gives the tree the best start.

We then tell you how to look after it, mainly how much to water it and when. A little care in the first year or two makes all the difference, and we make sure you know what to do. As it matures, we can also keep it healthy as it grows with light pruning when it needs it.

Small details make the tree last. Depth, soil preparation, support and watering all affect how well a new tree establishes.

Our planting method gives the tree the best start.

We focus on the things that matter once the tree is in the ground: root health, stability, drainage and simple aftercare.

Correct planting depth

The tree is planted at the right level so the roots can breathe, settle and grow out naturally.

Ground prepared properly

We loosen and prepare the soil around the planting area so new roots can move out into the garden.

Support where it is needed

We stake the tree where it needs wind support, without restricting natural movement or future growth.

Clear, fixed pricing

What Does Tree Planting Cost?

The cost depends on the job, so we give you a fixed price once we know what you want. If we supply the tree, the type and size of tree is the main factor. If you supply it, we just price the planting.

The other things that affect the price are how many trees you want, the ground conditions, and how easy the spot is to reach. We will go through it all with you so the price is clear from the start.

We are upfront about money. The price we quote is the full price, with nothing added at the end. You get a free, no-obligation quote before any work starts.

Tree type and size

If we supply the tree, the variety and size are the main things that affect the price.

How many trees

One tree is simple to price. Several trees may take longer, but can be better value in one visit.

Ground and access

Soil conditions, slopes, tight access, and how easy the planting spot is to reach all matter.

Common Questions

Tree Planting Questions, Answered

Straight answers about timing, supplying trees, aftercare, safe planting distances and planting a tree you have already bought.

When is the best time to plant a tree?

The best time to plant most trees is between autumn and early spring, roughly October to April, while the tree is dormant. Container-grown trees can go in at most times of year, as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. We will tell you the best time for the tree you have in mind.

Can you supply the tree as well as plant it?

Yes, we can source a suitable tree for you and plant it, or we can plant a tree you have already bought. Either way, we will help you choose something that suits your garden and the spot you have in mind.

How do I look after a newly planted tree?

The main thing is watering, especially through the first spring and summer while the roots take hold. Too little water is the biggest risk to a young tree, though waterlogged ground can be a problem too. We give you simple aftercare advice when we plant it.

How far from my house should a tree be planted?

It depends on the type of tree and how big it will grow, since some trees have far wider roots than others. As a rule, the bigger the tree at maturity, the further from the house it should go. We will advise a safe distance for your chosen tree and your property.

Will you plant a tree I've bought myself?

Yes, we are happy to plant a tree you have bought. We will plant it properly, at the right depth and with support if it needs it, and tell you how to care for it afterwards.
